Skateboarding in School: A New Chapter Begins in Saraburi

At first glance, skateboarding and school might seem like an unlikely pair — especially in Thailand, where skateboarding still carries some social stigma. But in Saraburi province, one school is breaking the mold by officially introducing a new and exciting extracurricular course: “Skateboarding Club.”

This initiative was pioneered by Mr. Arm – Akkaraphat Suphaphakham, an English teacher with a true passion for skateboarding. After school hours, Mr. Arm would often be found skating in the school’s open courtyard. Before long, the space became a gathering spot for local skaters — students and community members alike.

Recognizing the growing interest and positive energy surrounding the activity, the school opened up the courtyard as a free skate space for practice and play.

Turning Passion into Education

With the full support of the school director, who values sports and progressive learning approaches,Mr. Arm was given the green light to launch an official skateboarding class

under the school’s extracurricular program.

The course aims to help students develop physical skills such as balance, coordination, and overall fitness, while also encouraging learning through a passion-based activity.

In the early stages, Mr. Arm used his own personal skateboards and gear to teach. But as word spread within the skating community, fellow skaters began donating boards and equipment to the school — helping ensure the students had continued access to quality practice tools.

Despite this progress, the program still lacks essential safety gear such as helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads — particularly in sizes suitable for children.
