X Games: The Beginning, the Competition
and Its Influence on Skateboarding Culture
X Games is a global extreme sports event that brings together thrilling competitions in disciplines like BMX, Moto X, and, of course, skateboarding. With millions of viewers from around the world, the X Games played a key role in pushing skateboarding
into the global spotlight.
Its high-energy format, daring tricks, and media exposure helped skateboarding gain massive popularity — eventually leading to its official inclusion in the Olympic Games 2020

The Origin of "Extreme Games" Becoming X Games
The event was founded by ESPN in 1994, with the first competition held in 1995 in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island. Originally named the “Extreme Games,” it was created to attract a young audience—specifically Generation X and Millennials—by showcasing unconventional sports like skateboarding, BMX, motocross, and snowboarding.
The name was later shortened to X Games to give it a sleeker, more modern appeal.

Skateboarding and the X Games
Skateboarding has been a core part of the Summer X Games since its very first event in 1995. It quickly became a centerpiece of the competition, featuring three main styles: Street, Park, and Vert — with courses designed to mimic urban streetscapes, bowl-shaped pools, and half-pipes.
The X Games has pushed the boundaries of skateboarding by encouraging the creation of new, difficult tricks. Legends like Tony Hawk landed the iconic 900, Elliot Sloan amazed with his heelflip 720, and Guy Khury stunned fans with his kickflip body varial 900.
At the X Games California 2023, both men and women competed across Park and Street disciplines, providing a platform where athletes of all genders and ages can battle
X Games 1998: The Beginning of an Asian Legend in Phuket, Thailand
